The YWCA of India, born hundred years ago, is part of an International Organization of the world YWCA.

The largest membership based organization in the world. The YWCA unites and speaks for over 25 million women involved in YWCA work in over 91 countries around the world. In India, YWCA comprises 75 local associations around the country.

The Pune Branch of the YWCA was founded in 1878 and the rambling old bungalow in which the present YWCA HOSTEL is located, was originally donated to the Association by a founder member, Miss Mary Vitters.

Our Mission & Vision

"The vision and mission of the YWCA is to empower women at all levels to struggle for justice. This means moving into a Mission that is rooted in the reality of our country where people are the victims of economic and social injustice and are manipulated by socio, religious and political powers. The mission demands a changing of structures that are hierarchical and patriarchal, thereby encouraging equal participation of women at all levels. It also demands a change in the structures and ways of working within the YWCA, breaking down barriers of class and caste. A major focus must be awareness building, study and analysis, which must become necessary dimensions of every Programme in the YWCA which works with organizations with the similar Vision and Mission.

Further, it is required of every YWCA member/Leader to have commitment to this Mission."
